Luther Hinga

Luther Hinga is a Chartered Resource and Waste Manager at the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM). He possesses over 7 years’ experience working across the private, public and third sectors. His technical expertise lies in the design of waste management strategies for buildings, masterplans and cities in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Furthermore, he advises multinational corporations on their new product packaging portfolios to ensure they are designed suitably to be successfully recycled. Luther has a strong understanding of the various perspectives in the waste management and recycling supply chain. This gives him great fulfilment in sharing his knowledge to teach others about the very topical industry!

One of Luther’s highly cherished experiences was participating in the realm of government advisory. Here, he participated in waste management and circular economy policy amendments in The Gambia for the World Bank in April 2023. Luther is particularly passionate about contributing to the development of the waste management and recycling industry in Africa. He holds a Chemical Engineering degree from Aston University, UK. Which ignited his passion for engineering design and the environment.

Luther is also passionate about public speaking in the form of sharing the knowledge and experiences he has accrued to date for the benefit of others. Most notably, he delivered a speech in December 2016 for the Kenya High Commission London in Birmingham, UK titled ‘Challenges and experiences for Kenya Students in the UK’. Afterwhich, he delivered a TEDx talk in Kisumu, Kenya in August 2023 on five waste management policy reform opportunities for the county and national government in Kenya titled ‘Trash can be our Treasure!’. The following year in June 2024, Luther presented at a Point of Sale Display Board industry conference in London. Here, he educated companies like L’Oréal and Sky about the current state of the UK’s Recycling Infrastructure and best practice for product packaging design to ensure optimal recyclability within Material Recycling Facilities. That same year in December 2024, he delivered a workshop at Strathmore Business School for the Pit to Palace initiative on the fundamentals of waste management to upskill and educate employees from renowned companies like Brookside Dairy, My Dawa and many more. That same month, he was a panelist at the Jasiri Network Summit 2024 at the JW Marriott in Westlands, Nairobi discussing ‘Building Bridges: Enhancing Diaspora-Local Partnerships’ for event attendees.

Luther desires to, in his capacity as a committee member, contribute to the growth of the Kenya Society UK with enthusiasm and drive. He relishes this opportunity to contribute to this organisation that aligns to values so close to his heart.
